Meet Shelley, founder of Circle of Steps

We love finding out about local people who have started a business that brings the community together, even better if it also explores the beautiful area that we live in too.

Would you like to walk more with people and go on walks with a group rather than the same walk you do every week listening to a podcast? Shelley has set up the perfect opportunity to do just that, we spoke to Shelley to find out more about Circle of Steps.

*My name is Shelley Davies-Carr and I launched Circle of Steps in March 2026. The idea grew from my love of walking and a desire to create a welcoming community where women could enjoy the physical and mental benefits of spending time outdoors while making meaningful connections.

I live in Marlow and am a mum to four children, two of whom are at university and another who is about to start. Like many of the women who walk with me, I understand the challenges of juggling family, work and finding time for yourself.

I also walk with my black Labrador, Neo, on many of the walks. He is a friendly and much-loved member of the Circle of Steps community, and most walkers are delighted to have him along. In just a few months, more than 130 women have joined me on walks across Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.

Who is it for?

Circle of Steps is for women who enjoy walking, being outdoors and meeting like-minded people. Some come for fitness, some for friendship, some for the wellbeing benefits of spending time in nature, and many come for a combination of all three.

You don't need to be a fast walker or have extensive walking experience. The emphasis is on enjoyment, conversation and community.

One of my walkers recently described Circle of Steps as "NCT for midlife" and I think that's a wonderful way of putting it. Many women arrive knowing nobody and leave having found new friendships, support and a real sense of belonging.

What options are there for walks?

I offer a variety of guided walks throughout the week, including:

- Shorter social walks of around 3 miles

- Morning, afternoon, weekend and evening walks

- Longer countryside walks

- Special events and social gatherings

- Multi-stage challenge walks, including the English Camino

Walk distances and terrain vary, allowing people to choose walks that suit their interests and abilities.

Who comes along?

Women of all ages and backgrounds join the walks. Most arrive knowing nobody and are looking to expand their social circle, while others come with friends.

Many of the women who walk with Circle of Steps are working professionals, retirees, business owners, carers, mums whose children have grown up, or those simply looking for more connection and time outdoors. What they all have in common is a friendly and supportive attitude.

Do you walk all year round?

Yes. Circle of Steps operates throughout the year. Every season offers something different, from bluebells in spring and long summer evenings to autumn colours and crisp winter mornings.

Walks only need to be cancelled in exceptional weather conditions where safety could be compromised.

Pricing Structure

- Short walks (approximately 3 miles): £6 per person

- Medium walks (approximately 6 miles): £10 per person

There are also discounted packages available:

- Three medium walks for £25

- Ten medium walks for £75

- Unlimited monthly walking subscription for £55

Longer walks, special events and challenge walks may be priced differently depending on the distance, organisation involved and any additional support required.

I also run occasional free social events and introductory opportunities for those who would like to experience the community before booking a walk.

Anything Else People Should Know?

Circle of Steps is about much more than walking. It is about creating opportunities for women to prioritise themselves, spend time in nature, improve their wellbeing and build genuine friendships.

Many women tell me that joining a walk has given them confidence to explore new places, meet new people and spend more time outdoors. The supportive community that has developed has been one of the most rewarding aspects of launching the business.

For many women, taking that first step and turning up alone is the hardest part. They quickly discover that everyone else was once new too, and that a shared walk is one of the easiest ways to make new connections.

I'd be delighted to welcome anyone who would like to give it a try.

We love this idea and will be joining Shelley on a walk or two very soon, hope to see you there!
