Wedding dress shopping is one of the most exciting parts of planning your big day, but it can also feel a little overwhelming if you don’t know where to start. With so many styles, designers, and boutiques to choose from, a little preparation goes a long way.
When should you start?
Ideally, begin shopping 12 - 18 months before your wedding. This might sound early, but many dresses are made to order and can take 4 - 6 months to arrive, followed by alterations. Starting early gives you time to explore properly without pressure, and means you can actually enjoy the experience.

Do your research (but don’t overdo it)
Before booking appointments, spend some time browsing Pinterest, Instagram, and boutique websites to get a feel for what you like. Look for patterns - do you lean towards sleek and modern, soft and romantic, or structured and fashion-forward?That said, try not to become too fixed on one exact dress. Many brides end up choosing something completely different to what they initially had in mind so it’s so great to come in open minded.
Choose the right boutique
Not all bridal shops are the same, so it’s worth being selective. Look for boutiques whose style aligns with yours, and check their price ranges beforehand to avoid disappointment. Independent boutiques often offer a more personal, one-to-one experience and carefully curated collections, which can make all the difference.
Who should you bring?
Less is more. Bring 1 - 3 people whose opinions you truly trust and who understand your style. Too many voices can quickly become overwhelming and confusing. The best guests are those who support you, not those who will project their own tastes onto your decision.
Keep an open mind
Your stylist may suggest styles you hadn’t considered - and this is often where the magic happens. Bridal sizing and structure can make dresses look very different on the body compared to on the hanger, and as you go through your appointment your stylist will likely piece your preferences together and start making suggestions for you that you might not have thought of. Go with it and see – you just never know!
Trust your instinct
When you find “the one,” it’s rarely about ticking every box, it’s all about how you feel. If you feel confident, comfortable, and like the best version of yourself, you’re probably there. I always can tell a bride has found the one if they start talking the dress through the day and imagining it at the venue. When a bride can see it all coming together, and can imagine herself walking down the aisle in that dress it’s so special! Don’t doubt yourself and your decision making, only you know how the dress is making you feel, so go with it.
Most importantly, enjoy it. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it should feel special, relaxed, and genuinely fun.
