We spotted Mikey Cook upside down on Instagram and we were compelled to talk to him about his new Aerial Yoga class he has just launched at Flow in Marlow.
"My background in fitness started through a love of movement from a young age. I was always interested in dance and did gymnastics and trampolining at school. Years later, a friend convinced me to try Pole Fitness and I instantly fell in love with the creativity, strength and supportive atmosphere of the classes. That eventually led me to study Dance & Fitness at Bucks New University, where I gained my ETM, Level 2 Gym Instructor and Level 3 Personal Trainer qualifications alongside my degree.

Over the years I’ve taught many different styles of classes including Pole Fitness, HIIT, Indoor Cycling, Dance, Aerobics, Step, Barre, Reformer Pilates, Strength & Conditioning and Aerial disciplines. Currently I teach Barre, Reformer and Aerial.
I love teaching all three for different reasons:
Barre for the musicality, flow and energy,
Reformer for the structure and technical progression
Aerial for the creativity, freedom and sense of achievement it gives people.
Barre is a strength and conditioning focused workout that builds endurance, balance and core strength through high repetition movements and musical flow.
Reformer Pilates focuses on posture, alignment, spinal articulation, movement quality and core stability, using a progressive approach to help clients build strength and control over time.
Aerial Yoga is incredibly varied and combines strength, flexibility, mobility and mindfulness all in one class. One of the biggest benefits is the spinal decompression you get during inversions, alongside the confidence and empowerment it can help build. Plus it’s super fun.
What I love most about Aerial is the creativity and freedom of movement. It can feel graceful and beautiful whilst also being incredibly strong underneath. It’s fun, expressive and mentally freeing as well as physically challenging.
Aerial is genuinely for all levels. A lot of people think they need to already be strong or flexible before trying it, but the class itself helps build those things. I always adapt movements depending on who is in the room so everyone feels welcome.
The thing that surprises people most is how accessible and enjoyable it is. People often arrive nervous but leave smiling and feeling proud of themselves.
I currently teach at Flow, Fuse in Beaconsfield and Yatta in Beaconsfield.
At Flow I teach Barre, Reformer and Aerial classes on Monday mornings and evenings, Thursday evenings and Friday lunchtimes
What I love about Flow is the sense of community. It’s such a welcoming and supportive space, and the atmosphere the team has created there is incredibly inspiring.
I think the biggest thing I want people to take away is that movement should feel enjoyable and accessible to everyone. You don’t need experience to start, sometimes you just need to be open to trying something new and having fun with it. "
